2008 Healthy Community Checkup Report

The Human Services Element (HSE) of BI’s Comprehensive Plan provides HHHS with policy direction for community actions relating to human services. The HSE establishes a framework of values and a set of goals and policies.  It exists to ensure that the human services needs of the people of Bainbridge Island are met and that they continue to be met even as changes occur.

The HSE specifically requires HHHS to develop a needs assessment to “identify emerging problems in the community and assist in coordinating planning efforts to respond to the needs and assess appropriate levels of City funding.”

The overriding principle is found in the Human Services Element’s framework statement:

Bainbridge Island will function as a caring community that strives to maintain the well-being of all its members, a community where all members feel connected to the community, and where each individual has opportunities to contribute to the community.

The Healthy Community Checkup Project is our periodic update of our Needs Assessment. We have updated our original survey of Human Service Needs, we have updated and developed a Community Demographic Profile. We are working to establish a set of measurable "Healthy Community Indicators" that can be used over time to see how we are doing in sustaining a healthy community.

Update Survey of Human Service Needs
We have resurveyed over 150 “Key Contacts” and 40 Agencies serving Bainbridge Island to update our previous information on service gap areas and to assess how those gap areas are being addressed. We are also looking at any emerging needs and issues. This information is part of the Healthy Community Checkup Report

For more information please see:

Develop a Community Demographic Profile
We have updated our data on Bainbridge Island’s economy, growth, employment, crime rate and demographics on BI residents and we have identified changes since our last profile was developed in 2002. For more information please see the updated Demographic Profile.

Community Engagement

We have engaged over 600 people to help define what makes a healthy community and where human services fit into the picture. We have engaged people in a series of five focus groups, presentations at various meetings, interviews outside of grocery stores and the farmer’s market, and through our internet online survey.

The combined research has resulted in our Healthy Community Checkup Report.

Next Steps

HHHS IS COMMITTED TO MOVING FORWARD!  We plan on:

  • Sharing what we've learned as broadly as possible throught our community.  If you have ideas about how to share the results from the Healthy community Checkup and continue the conversation, please call 206.842.9335 or email us.
  • Work with human service providers to generate ideas for addressing unmet needs and assist them in coordinating reponses.
  • Create a task force that will include agency directrs along with HHHS board members to lead the development and use of key indicators for human services.  These can then serve as a prototype for the possible development of indicators in other areas.
  • Present and discuss our results with the City's Community Relations Committee and work with the Inter-Governmental Work Group (School District, Parks, & City) to analyze issues raised across a number of recent citizen surveys.
